Questions on the US Economy We Should Consider

As of April 9th, 2011, the United States Government experienced a shutdown. In other words, the soldiers who serve the United States are not being paid(even though we are now at war with Libya without the approval of Congress), yet no other person who works for the government(Post Office workers, Public Electricity companies, etc.) are still being paid.  But the reason for this shutdown was because our government has spent too much and is trying to work out a new budget plan in order to reboot this economy. Correct me if I am mistaken, but are people currently being optimistic about the economy recovering? Or was that before the Government Shutdown we just experienced? Because according to me, I haven’t seen much improvement in the economy. I still see our country’s debt being about $14.3 trillion and counting upwards. But on top of our growing debt, government shutdown, and new war, the Obama Administration would like to propose that we higher taxes (in general). He did say that he would cut spending because we need a balance between spending and taxes, but wouldn’t lowering the Government’s spending more than planned as of now put us less in debt? Another question I have is what are our tax dollars paying for anyhow? The war with Libya just began, but what group, project, or paycheck is all our money going to that has put us that far in debt? I am well aware that China’s booming economy and all the products they export to us creates a bump in our debt, but what else is there?

Viewing all of that, I have an argument to place. Won’t heightening the the taxes harm more than help? Our unemployment rate of the labor force is currently at 9.2%–but might I add that if you are unemployed for longer than a specified time, you do not count as part of the American Labor force– and taxes have been climbing upwards, so how would heightening any taxes encourage spending more than before? If they are trying to balance taxes and spending, yet they have to higher taxes in order to balance the two, isn’t spending still too high? I would like you, as an American Citizen who pays their taxes, of how our money is being handled once it leaves our hands, and even while we are still trying to keep it in our wallets during these harsh times.
